My name is Jason McKnight (he/they) and I am a PhD candidate in the Higher Education program at the University of Massachusetts Boston. I am writing to invite you to take part in a research study that I am conducting that explores how doctoral students experience providing and/or choosing not to provide positive or negative feedback to their faculty advisors. Some examples of feedback include sharing gratitude to an advisor for their intervention in a situation; providing thoughts, directly or indirectly, to an advisor about their advising style; or engaging in a conversation with an advisor about a research approach, like using a particular lab technique in an experiment or a specific theorist for a conceptual framework.
For my study, I am looking for participants who meet the following criteria:
- Currently enrolled in an in-person doctoral degree program;
- Have been in a formal advising relationship with a faculty research advisor for at least one year. (A faculty research advisor for the purposes of this study is defined as the advisor responsible for guiding you in research that will contribute to your dissertation);
- Has access to a web camera.
Participation in this study is completely voluntary and includes the completion of a screening questionnaire for eligibility and, if selected, participation in a 60-minute interview conducted online via Zoom. If you choose to participate, the information you share will be kept confidential and your name and other personally identifying information will not be associated with your responses.
Each selected participant will receive a $30 gift card to Amazon or a vendor of their choosing after the interview.
If you meet the eligibility criteria and this study interests you, please complete the screening questionnaire at https://umassboston.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7PsSO3squblqbUG. Please email me at jason.mcknight001@umb.edu if you have any questions.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you!
Best wishes,
Jason McKnight
