The University of North Carolina Greensboro invites applications for the position of Associate Director of Study Abroad and Exchanges. The Associate Director is responsible for providing our diverse student body with access to global engagement opportunities through the full-cycle management and administration of all education abroad programs (including faculty-led, virtual programs, research abroad and global internships) for 450+ students. The oversight of education abroad will require providing direct service, management and supporting the development of policy as it relates to comprehensive internationalization, crisis management, program development, financial management, office administration, student advising and student health and safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Associate Director of Study Abroad and Exchanges is responsible for:

  • Sharing and disseminating information on current issues in international higher education, the field of education abroad, and international mobility trends with staff and the University for strategic planning purposes.
  • Communicating implications of data analysis to upper administration
  • The day-to-day management and oversight of all education abroad programs and working closely with the Senior Director and the Associate Provost for International Programs to create a variety of new programs aimed at diversifying education abroad;
  • Enhancing effective partnerships with academic units and non-academic units on campus; 
  • Working with the staff to streamline program development processes, manage budgets, assess and manage risk associated with education abroad, communicate and implement policies, develop and monitor performance indicators for programmatic success, liaise with students, parents, faculty and program providers; 
  • Representing with considerable independence the University and its education abroad programs throughout the campus, with professional organizations and associations throughout the world, and with current global partners;
  • Working collaboratively with the staff to reach strategic goals and strengthen the communication of the office with academic and non-academic units, students, and international partners; and
  • Acting as an advocate for international education experiences and serves as the principal liaison with faculty and academic units to integrate international experiences into the curricula.
  • Supervising and providing leadership to a staff of 3 full-time employees and student workers
  • Serving on the university-wide committees, such as but not limited to: the University-Affiliated International Travel Review Committee, the Study Abroad Committee, and IPC Advisory Committee;
  • Duties as determined appropriate for the level of this position.

Minimum Qualifications

The incumbent must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as required by federal regulations in order to serve as an ARO. A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree with an international focus or in a related field is preferred. Outstanding intercultural sensitivity, exemplary written and verbal competency, excellent computer skills, and experience working, living, and/or studying abroad are also required. 

The incumbent must be able to relate to students of diverse backgrounds and work effectively with multiple administrative and academic offices. Three to five years of experience working in the education abroad field, preferably in a public higher educational system like UNC, would be advantageous to this position. This position requires the ability to develop and interpret policies and procedures of both UNCG and partner institutions and advise stakeholders accordingly.
