Lakshmi Rao Simhambhatla, a second-year full-time Ph.D. student presented at the Southeastern Student Conduct Institute (SSCI) presented by the Association of Student Conduct Administration (ASCA) in North Carolina State University, in Raleigh in June 17-18, 2026.
Her presentation titledĀ Beyond Intent: Rethinking Academic Integrity Through Student Understanding and Preventive Education focused on how assessment-informed strategies, clarity in communication, and early educational interventions can reduce violations and strengthen academic integrity.
Academic integrity violations are often understood through intent, whether student behavior reflects misunderstanding or a lack of clarity around expectations. This presentation reframed that approach by examining how violations emerge from gaps in academic integrity understanding rather than deliberate misconduct. Drawing on practices across community colleges, two-year, and four-year institutions, including examples from Virginia, the session explored how diverse student backgrounds shape integrity-related behaviors. Ways to align conduct practices with educational goals that aid in shifting from mere disciplinary reactions to developmental and learning-centered processes were examined. It also familiarized the participants with approaches that help identify common patterns of misunderstanding in academic integrity cases. Strategies supporting preventive efforts such as incorporating academic integrity into first-year experiences, improving consistency and clarity in policy communication, and framing more receptive educational interventions were also discussed.
