Academic Initiatives Graduate Assistant
DESCRIPTION:
The Academic Success Center (ASC) empowers learners to thrive academically, personally, and professionally. To aid in ASC’s mission, the Academic Initiatives unit promotes student success in the classroom and beyond. Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator for Academic Enrichment Programs, the Academic Initiatives Graduate Assistant will assist the unit by supporting Impact Learning Communities (ILC), Annual Campus Theme, Tutoring and Instructional Support, along with other academic enrichment opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrolled full-time in a graduate degree program with minimum GPA of 3.0
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and public speaking communications skills
- Knowledge of higher education culture and resources
- Experience with Excel, Canvas, and survey software
- Experience with assisting in program development
- Excellent organization, prioritization, and time management skills
- Demonstrates problem solving skills with emphasis on professional communication
- Demonstrates positive attitude, self-motivation, and the ability to be flexible
- Preferred experience in planning and facilitating training and/or workshops
- Preferred experience in management, supervision, or leadership
- Must be willing to make a commitment of one academic year
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Management and Development
- Maintain 20 office hours a week with flexibility when needed, some weekend or evening hours may be required
- Attend weekly meetings with supervisor and professional staff meetings when needed
- Assist Academic Initiatives with program creation and implementation including, but not limited to monitoring student registration, supporting event logistics (room reservations, catering, setup, etc.)
- Research benchmark institutions regarding academic support practices and student development theories
- Support in the creation of print and online marketing materials and academic support resources
- Assist with special events within the Academic Success Center (e.g., staffing tables and/or giving presentations)
- Perform other duties as assigned
Tutor Coordination
- Assist with website maintenance (beginning of each semester)
- Monitor and respond to tutoring and related requests via shared email
- Assist with delivery of CRLA/embedded tutor training as needed including, but not limited to Canvas pedagogy course
Supervision
- Communicate regularly, supervise, and evaluate ILC Peer Mentors
- Plan and facilitate ILC Peer Mentor meetings
- Assist supervisor with hiring (e.g. sending recruitment emails, reviewing applications, interviewing, etc.) and leading pre-semester and ongoing trainings
- Observe ILC Peer Mentors and Embedded Tutors operating in their roles
Data Collection
- Work collaboratively with supervisor to conduct data collection and analysis
- Support survey creation and dissemination
- Assist with the maintenance of various databases, schedules, and systems for the upkeep of the programs
- Assist with special projects related to ILCs, Annual Campus Theme, Tutoring and Instructional Support, and others as assigned
COMPENSATION:
The Academic Initiatives Graduate Assistant position is paid a $15,000 stipend for the academic year. The assistantship begins on August 10, 2023 and ends on May 9, 2024. This assistantship requires a one academic year commitment.
