Fall 2022 Internship: College of Sciences Advising

Position Description: The Intern will assist the College of Sciences Advising Office.  This office is responsible for advising Biology and freshman Psychology majors and providing academic assistance to other majors in the college.General responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with advising freshman Biology and Intended Psychology students
  • Assist with developing and implementing programming for students in the College of Sciences; emphasis will be placed on psychology students
  • Assist Director with special projects
  • Attend professional development events such as weekly staff meeting, Excellence in Advising Meeting (monthly), and earn a Master in Advising Certificate
  • Attend and assist office with recruitment events such as Open House

Minimum Qualifications: Intern must be a second-year student in the Higher Education program. The candidate must be knowledgeable and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite Software and the Google suite.  The candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills as well as interpersonal skills. Potential candidates should also be able to work with team members and work independently, as necessary, to complete tasks and meet deadlines.  Experience working with culturally diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of policies and resources common to institutions of higher education such as FERPA regulations; Strong presentation skills; 

Length of Internship: Fall Semester:  August-December

Hours: Desired for intern to work at least 15 hours

Knowledge and skills acquired through experience:

  • Experience advising undergraduate students in STEM majors
  • Experience with coordinating events and programming
  • Experience with admissions events, orientations and walk-in advising
  • Enhance oral and written communications as well as strengthen presentation skills
  • Experience with one-on-one and group advising.
  • Becoming familiar with the culture of an advising office and experience responsibilities and duties of an advisor
