Job Summary: The Graduate Assistant for Distance Learning Academic and Student Support Operations supports the Director of Student Support Services, as well as the Assistant Vice-President for Academic and Student Support Operations, to support the online undergraduate student population at the University.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with students who would like to change between main campus and fully online via database management and student appointments, if requested by the student.
  • Assist with special projects related to advising and student engagement in an online environment that are being developed by the Director and AVP.
  • Act as a point of contact for any walk-ins during normal business hours.
  • Assist with reaching out to new online freshmen, partnering with Director and AVP on retention activities. This may include meeting with students individually for success coaching. 
  • Teach an online section of UNIV 110 Academic Success during the Spring semester to freshmen placed on academic warning after their initial fall semester.

Education & Experience (Preferred Majors): Masters or Doctoral students in Higher Education or Counseling preferred.

Employment Schedule/Hours: 20 hours a week, on campus. Schedule can be flexible between 8am-5pm Mon-Fri. 

Academic Qualifications: Regular admission in a graduate degree program at ODU with good academic standing, maintenance of a full course load of student enrollment during the term of their appointment, and a 3.0 or higher GPA is required.  Dropping below the required GPA or reducing one’s course load below full-time can be grounds for dismissal.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, OneNote, SharePoint, Teams)
  • Experience using Zoom or other web conferencing platforms
  • Experience working with a variety of college student populations (freshmen, transfer, non-traditional, online)
  • Interest in college student support/success/retention

Position Reports to: Director of Student Support Services

Knowledge and Skills Derived from Experience:

  • Experience supporting a variety of college student populations
  • Experience engaging remotely with both staff and students on a regular basis
  • Knowledge of online academic advising and student support/retention practices
  • Experience utilizing various technology tools including CRMs (TargetX), Student Information Systems (Leo Online/Banner), Learning Management Systems (Canvas) and digital shared spaces (SharePoint, OneNote, Teams)
  • Online teaching (opportunity for asynchronous and synchronous experiences)

Compensation: $5,000 per semester plus an amount equivalent to 3 credit hours of tuition. 

Length of Assistantship: Academic Year 2022-23 with option to extend through Summer 2023 and following academic year
