Dissertation Fellowship for Academic Year 2022-2023

Description: Up to four dissertation fellowships will be awarded to support students full-time in their final year of doctoral studies while they are completing their dissertations. Applicants must have completed at least 3 terms of full-time doctoral work (or the equivalent of part-time doctoral work) by the time the award is to be received and must be projected to complete their final dissertation defense within the upcoming academic year. Students must be enrolled full-time during the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters and must devote full-time to their academic studies.

Award Amount: Stipend of $15,000 and up to 9 credit hours for the Fall semester and up to 9 credit hours for the Spring semester of in-state tuition.

Criteria for Selection: Applications are reviewed by a panel of graduate faculty from each department. In selecting fellowship recipients, the following criteria will be considered:

  • Superior academic performance compared to peers during doctoral studies
  • Promise for success as a doctoral-level professional
  • Potential of applicant to make a significant contribution to the field

Application Process: To apply, please include all of the following items in one application package, assembled electronically in PDF format.

  1. Award application form with applicant’s signature;
  2. A statement of (a) what you believe will be the potential impact of your dissertation research on future research and/or applications; and (b) what career path you hope to pursue after completing your dissertation;
  3. A current resume or curriculum vitae;
  4. A current graduate transcript;
  5. A statement from your dissertation chair must be submitted that addresses the following issues: (1) the applicant’s academic performance compared to his or her peers during doctoral studies; (2) the applicant’s progress in the dissertation process up to this point and a projection of the month and year that the applicant will most likely successfully defend the final dissertation; (3) scholarly activities in which the applicant will engage in the next academic year while completing the dissertation; and (4) detailed plans for the dissertation chair’s mentoring relationship and activities with the applicant during the next academic year.
  6. A description of the dissertation project that addresses the following sections: (1) introduction section should situate your study within a larger research context and explain why the study is important and timely; (2) literature review section that briefly describes the relevant bodies of research knowledge that informs the dissertation work; (3) design and methods section that identifies methods and study’s research design; and (4) description of work and/or findings to date, if applicable. This description is not your dissertation proposal. It should be limited to three pages.

Deadline: Complete applications must be received by the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research on or before March 4, 2022 by 4:59pm EST.
