Number of positions:

Job Summary: The Graduate Assistant for Student Transition & Family Programs will assist in the coordination of Monarch Orientation Leader recruitment, selection, and training. Additionally, the Graduate Assistant will assist in program evaluation and assessment efforts, support staff with overall new and transfer student orientation program logistics, and provide general administrative support.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate Monarch Orientation Leader recruitment, selection, and training 
  • Supervise Monarch Orientation Leaders and Coordinators and uphold employment contracts 
  • Manage Monarch Orientation Leader involvement in Week of Welcome and University sponsored activities and events 
  • Develop and administer Monarch Orientation Leader evaluation and assessment 
  • Contribute to Monarch Orientation program execution and evaluation 
  • Create and execute transition programming for special populations (i.e., transfer, first generation, military affiliated, etc.) 
  • Provide general administrative support tasks 

Required Skills: 

  • Regular or provisional admission in a graduate degree program (higher education program preferred) at ODU with good academic standing 
  • Maintain a full course of study during the term of their appointment 
  • Desire to support new students and families through their transition to ODU 
  • Commitment to supporting the Office, Division, and University mission and enrollment goals 
  • Dedication to lifelong learning and growth 
  • Professionalism and strong work ethic 
  • Teamwork mentality and collaborative nature 
  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills 
  • Ability to serve as a role model and leader to undergraduate students and office representative to campus stakeholders 
  • Experience with campus programming for undergraduate students and/or parents/families 
  • Graphic design skills 

Employment Schedule/Hours: The GA position requires 20 hours per week, including some evenings and weekend programs. 

Academic Qualifications & Preferred Majors: Regular admission in a graduate degree program at ODU with good academic standing, maintenance of a full course load of student enrollment during the term of their appointment, and a 3.0 or higher GPA is required.  Dropping below the required GPA or reducing one’s course load below full-time can be grounds for dismissal.

Knowledge and Skills Derived from Experience: 

  • Supervision and personnel coordination experience  
  • Program management and execution experience  
  • A working knowledge of transition programming  
  • An understanding of the effective use and application of assessment in practice 

Compensation: $10,000 stipend 

Length of Assistantship: 2021-2022 academic year (August 16, 2021 – May 7, 2022) with obligation to work Monarch Orientation season (May-August 2022)
