Higher Education Student Association (HESA) prepares for Orange Shirt Day (9/30 Kaufman Mall)

Some of the students of the Higher Education Student Association (HESA) spent this summer doing in-person research for their Orange Shirt Day Remembrance Day. Despite the summer heat, Gracie Stewart, Teresa Duvall, Lakshmi Rao Simhambhatla, and Kcatt Christian (pictured) went out to the 7th Annual Nansemond Indian Tribe POWWOW out in Suffolk.

There was dancing, jewelry, ODU Alumni, books, and more. Every age group had something to engage with, including teachers demonstrating how instruments used to be made and the evolution of food amongst the tribe. After grabbing fry bread, mystery bags, stickers, and plenty of books, HESA was all set to get back to work setting up for Orange Shirt Day.

Join HESA this September 30th to honor the lives lost and families torn apart by residential schools on Kaufman Mall from 11am-1pm. If there is rain, they will move the event to the Webb Center Lobby space. Enjoy food, education, and a moment of silence for the children lost, because every child matters.
