Dr. Laura Smithers has a new publication in the journal Futures. The article, Student Success as Preemption: Predictive Constructions of Futures-to-Never-Come, explores the student success movement in higher education as a movement to act on the threat of student failure before it emerges. Through an analysis of several empirical sites, she argues that this logic of preemption creates student and campus realities in its deferral of threat. This reality takes the form of an impasse that permanently defers the future. An alternative to preemption that keeps student futures speculative is offered.
